So much of creativity is impromptu, that it’s almost impossible to predict which way it’s going to go… until it’s gone.
Taking a minute, on top of another minute, is therefore not always ‘delay tactics’, nor time-wasting… contrary to what our own worst critic might tell us!
Instead, it should be deemed ‘for the art’… and a loophole worthy of taking full advantage of, whenever the ideas pool runs dry.
What I like to do especially, in this window ‘brought time’, and to help get the ideas fountain flowing again, is something which I appreciate might invite some fairly fierce debate.
That is… I like to SCROLL!
Not stroll, for that would be far too textbook to warrant an entire post…but rather scroll, scroll and scroll some more.
Far from being mind-numbing, or a bow and arrow to the brain cells, I find immersing myself in the one tap world of words and pictures can - if approached correctly - be a solution to creative block.
In a conclusion that proves it’s not called a ‘feed’ for nothing, I find what’s helpful, is to remove all guilt from ‘social media snacks’, and instead see them as an important component of an overall BALANCED mental diet.
This ‘what-works-for-me’ has many caveats, and is definitely not a panacea, don’t get me wrong!
What it is, however, is almost a form of passive productivity, where all it takes is a chance encounter with a stand-out sound or template, for the minds-eye to begin connecting the dots between concept…and creation.
‘Brain breaks’, brainstorming, spider diagraming - they’re still an important part of the writer’s armoury - but put it this way, this article wouldn’t exist if it wasn’t for stumbling across this sound on a recent scroll break.
Even the post this video was for (for @eazy_peel) has a similar back-story. A tale of hashtags to riches - rooted in the humble beginnings of a trending sound.
The results might well be short but sweet, quite often, but in a way this only adds weight to the conclusion I’ve come to, that not only is less sometimes more, but just as frequently… more is less.
More scrolling… less time clutching at straws when it comes to bossing this thing they call ‘reels.’
